For John... Le Gesualdo Consort d'Amsterdam

This is for you John because I didn't even know who Gesualdo was!

The day before the Brussels concert Merel and I were able to sit in on the end of the rehearsal in Almede (at the director's home). That was my first experience of this group's wonderful, unaccompanied singing. In the small space it was electrifying.

There are six performers and this is the first time Lauren has performed with them as a group. Clearly their membership changes over time and depending on availability. Information is available at the Bach Cantatas website and Le Gesualdo Consort d'Amsterdam

The nine pieces they performed were interspersed with organ pieces from the same period (organist is at the far left in the photos). The theme was 'ombres et lumiere en Italie: Gesualdo et ses contemporains' or 'licht en duisternis in Italie: Gesualdo en tijdgenoten' (Belgium being bilingual!).  I have a feeling Lauren might be involved in making a CD with the group later in the year - though I may have misheard. I'll try and find out more.

On the lighter side... proof of beer consumption. Lauren, Merel, Jaap, Gerda and me having a meal before the concert.

  1. I would imagine the acoustics in the Église would have been wonderful as well. Sigh!
(Pst. If you are still in Belgium, don't forget the beer at the Trappist monasteries!)
